Shaman VisitShaman visit in Nepal
Nepal is home to over sixty distinct ethnic and linguistic tribal groups, more than half of which practice some form of shamanism. Not surprisingly, then, the shamanic practices of Nepal reflect a diverse array of influences, among them Tibetan "Bon" religion (probably an early form of Tibetan shamanism), Tibetan Buddhism, early Hinduism and an apparently unbroken line of traditon and history dating all the way back to their Stone Age origins. It is likely that many of the healing practices of Buddhism and Hinduism share a common origin with Himalayan shamanism. However, Nepalese shamans belong to different religious groups and do not see themselves or their shamanic roles as "religious".
Shamanism is probably humankind's oldest healing tradition having survived for tens of thousands of years. Because of their psychological techniques, shames are sometimes described as the world's first psychologists and psychotherapists, shamans are often confused with other healing practitioners such as priests, mediums, and with doctors and do in fact often fill these roles. Shamans consult spirits regarding problems such as curing the sick and guiding the souls of the dead. The spirits then prescribe a ritual, which the shaman must perform as a solution. Performance of Jhankari by beating drums & swallowing fire to drive away the evil spirits is spectacular to watch..
Shamans have the ability to "see" visions, performing experiments to heal and gain knowledge by moving beyond the physical body into an ecstatic, trance-like state. It is at this time that the shaman's soul is believed to leave the body and travel to the heavens or the underworld. While in this trance, the shaman is possessed by the spirits and gains powers of knowing and healing. With practices that date back to 10,000 years ago and roots in regions around the world, the religious and cultural tradition of shamanism is one of the oldest forms of healing. |
